information stocks–: How do people get illegal insider information on stocks? Like the people on wall-street?
Not saying I think it is right but how do they know like a stocks earnings are going to be higher the day before the company is going to report their quarterly earnings? Kind of like Google recently. Or how do they know a company is about to bought out by another before it’s reported?
The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

A friend of mine worked for Google, and the employees were offered stock options before the company went public. Who knew it was going to happen and told me about it, and told me how much it was going to be on sale for.
I didn’t buy stock in it, but I assume most people find out from someone who works within a company about what’s going on with the finances of that company.

Usually only top CEOs/CFOs/accountants know this information and sometimes it gets leaked down to cronies.
The only people that truly get insider information are people that work at the company, the rest is leaked/rumored.
The SEC investigates inside traders all the time.

well lets say i own company X. I have been hiding how bad of debt the company is in. (U can do this various ways through shifty accounting and allocating costs and profits different ways) I tell you, a friend who owns a large part of the X stock but not associated with company X in any other way. You sell off all your stock – That is insider trading. Insiders of the companies sharing confidential financial info about the firm w/ people outside the company.
examples being – martha stewart and enron – check them out

The kind of insider information that you’re really talking about isn’t related to earnings, it’s related to acquisitions.
Company ABC decides that it would be strategically beneficial to buy or merge with company XYZ. ABC will turn to investment banks and law firms to help determine what XYZ is worth and the best way to finance it. It’s employees of these investment banks and law firms that are usually the ones with inside information since the deal is formed over the course of weeks and they usually offer a significant premium to the current price for XYZ stock.
Generally a public company will report its earnings very quickly after it’s able to compile them, and even then, very few people, maybe only 1 or 2, will have access to all of the results from the myriad divisions and departments.

A variety of sources.
CEO’s secretary.
There are also accountants, corporate brokers etc. doing work for quoted companies. There will inevitably be leeks.
It is surprising what CEO s will tell you at the post analyst meetings in the bar or restaurant.
One CEO asked me how would I go about shorting stock. OK, he didn’t say he wanted to short his own stock, but they halved in value in the following couple of weeks

Question–: Best source for stocks trading information?
I have just started trading stocks and I need to educate myself so as to become a better investor. I consider myslef a “swing trader”. I am using AmeriTrade for now as the Online borker. The trouble is that most of the info on the web is misleading. And that’s why I guess most of the people loose money.
In your opinion, what is the best source of information about stocks?. I mean I need an “indepndent” reliable source that is not just trying to sell me something. Thanks

The annual reports. Its the best way to learn about the company and its competitors. pick up a book on financial accounting or better yet take a class. Remember most people lose money by trading too often. If you’ve just started the best thing to do is dollar-cost-average the S&P 500

I feel comfortable with smartmoney.com. They are probing and using common sense language. Most writers justify their reasons of recommendations. They are least high and mighty.

Investors Business Daily has incredible information. They will likely send you some sort of informational material with a free trial of their newspaper or website.
Much of the changes in Wall Street Journal in recent years have been made as response to offerings of IBD.
Additionally, IBD offers empowering outlook for both personal and financial growth.
